Summer Smell
2025

Hot grass
Broken flip-flop
Dirt between
Red painted toes

Time stretches
Squinting in a lawn chair
Sweat tracing
Lower spine

I say yes to anything
Hopeless, optimistic
Promise of apocalypse
Asphalt cracks
Empty parking lot
Heat mirage

Searching for purpose
Finding bodies of water
Can't seem to hold on to anything
I look down at damp palms

Thinking of
Birds who flock
Because the sky tells them to
Crickets that hum
Electric nights
Warm wind
Street lamp buzz
Sounds of stillness
Deafening truth

I celebrate unknowns
On the porch of a Mexican restaurant
Resisting predictions
Keeping eyes at my feet
I spot gum on the sidewalk
I step around it

Summer smells of rot and growth
Violent thoughts of entropy
Dreaming of incredible collapse
And days off work

Favorite green canopies
Winding 'round the bend
Sun spots blurring
Pedaling hard
Sweltering freedom
Life is terrible but perfect
back to project
